Citroën DS inspired Ambulance

The ambulance i’ve made for our Student Film “Nid D’embrouilles”

We wanted to Feature a modified Citroën DS for our ambulance since our film take place in 1970’s France.
I’ve stylized a little bit the shapes, without straying too far from the original design since its already quite a bold one with lots of curves and an elongated hood.

Modeled with 3ds Max, rendered with maya Arnold.

Anais Berost Made the interior of the vehicle while I made the exterior.

Concept Art

Quick concept art I made to explore different shapes, we choose to settle for the bottom left one.

Substance Painter Mask

I’m using the red and green channel of a RGB Mask to tell Arnold when to switch between different shaders, this allows me to then use tiled textures and as
such to have a great texel density without having to use a ton of different udims.

Not visualized here but i’m also using a previz shader in substance painter, it let me have a rough preview of how the rust will look like without having to
launch a render each time, it’s worth it in order to iterate much faster at the early stages.

Arnold Maya Car Paint Shader

Full car paint shader inside of Maya hypershade, looks quite messy because maya hypershade rearrange the nodes each time you reopen the shader.
It makes everything more confusing and once you tried Unreal where you can neatly arrange every node you realize how much time and energy
you lost understanding your own shader graph in maya.

Clip of the Ambulance in our Film

Sadly it uses an older incomplete version of my car paint shader because we ran out of time during production and I had to move on and continue on rendering the film.
For this shot I was responsible of making the environment, render and post production, as well as the exterior of the ambulance and the character inside.
